LECOM: What made you join?
John Wroblewski: As evidenced by my “Before” photo, my wellness situation was deplorable to the point where I was close to being classified as Obese III; my weight was about 25 pounds from 300. To make matters worse, I had open heart surgery 20 years ago however slipped back into terrible eating habits resulting in a lifestyle which was unacceptable. So unacceptable, that I attended a workshop on stomach surgery for weight loss but rejected surgery because of the potential negative effects.
Coincidently a TV station partnered with a gym to host Erie’s version of the TV show “The Greatest Loser”. I was fortunate to be select and participated in an intensive 6-month program consisting of group exercises, meal planning with a dietitian and peer group support meeting. At end of the program, I lost 45 pounds, I was not the biggest loser, however, I did discover the “real secret” for weight loss.
And the real secret for weight loss is not the amount of loss pounds, nor how many push-ups, nor how fast you can run, but the real secret is wellness and the exact motivation a person finds within themselves to strive for wellness, which includes a complete, re-invented, re-designed lifestyle change and a fundamental change in a person’s Philosophy of Life: give joy, get joy.
I joined because LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center‘s philosophy of nurturing the mind, body, and spirit is critical in my endeavors to achieve lifelong wellness and longevity for my family.
LECOM: What you enjoy about the facility?
John Wroblewski: The physical attributes of the facility are similar to traditional gyms: exercise equipment by same vendors, pools, racquetball courts, running track, weight room, group exercise classes, etc. However what I enjoy about LECOM is the staff and personnel who highly differentiate LECOM from the traditional gyms which seem to focus only on physical fitness and current exercise trends.
The professionalism, education, certifications of instructors and trainers are incredible. Their view of wellness supports mine and I sense each instructor and trainer has a sincere desire to help any member with any problem. Secondly, I enjoy the openness of the management staff that is always open to hearing my concerns or accolades.
LECOM: How has the Center helped you reach your goals?
John Wroblewski: My goal of life long wellness has been enriched by the quality of group exercise instructors, the number and diversity of group classes including yoga, the introduction of 30 minutes classes and RPM and virtual classes, the one to one commitment and advice of instructors and management. The Center has also helped me reach my goal by providing challenges (Les Mills Holiday Challenge, Thanksgiving, Beat the Trainer etc.) throughout the year. I view the challenges as motivation and hope the Center will continue with challenges and also continue with rollout of new releases for BODYPUMP™, SPRINT™, and others.
